Therapy for Women in Healthcare

Does your brain ever sound like this as a woman in healthcare?

“Am I the only one who can’t stop thinking about that patient we lost a few months ago? I’m embarrassed, losing patients is part of the job.”

Healthcare professional shortages are starting to get to me, I think I’m working too much - but how do I create boundaries when the need is so great?”

“Everyone keeps telling me to turn my brain off work mode - but every time I try I just end up thinking about patients. This responsibility is crushing me.”

“Okay, if I’m honest it’s not just that patient we lost a few months ago I can’t stop thinking about, events from my work days play in my head over and over again - no matter what I do.”

“I’m burnt out but, honestly, I don’t even know what I like about life anymore - where do I start?”

My Dear, You are NOT Alone

My Dear, You are NOT Alone

You’re not crazy either, research shows that women in healthcare experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, burnout and moral injury than their male counterparts - with 77.8% reporting sleep disturbances alone.

PTSD diagnoses of healthcare professionals have skyrocketed since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic, with women being diagnosed more frequently due to the overwhelming demands placed on them outside of work, while navigating a work environment which became exponentially more dangerous overnight.

While you’re working 12-hour shifts, asking everyone and (literally) their Mom how they’re doing and feeling - who is checking in on you? Who is asking you what you want from yourself, your family, your career and your wild, beautiful life?

It’s time for Women in Healthcare to get the compassionate, customized care they need, not only because our world needs you, but also because you deserve to be the main character of your life.

As a therapist experienced with both treating and working alongside Medical Professionals, I promise you, I get it.

You’re a woman working in Healthcare, so here’s a few things I already know about you: 1. You love your patients and always want the best for them and 2. You are exceptionally capable - you know your medical options regarding your mental health symptoms and, chances are, you are using them.

But, still, an emptiness persists. You need someone who can help you figure out what exactly needs to shift in your life, without being asked if you can “just quit” your job a million times.

I have experience working with powerhouse nurses at the beginning of or near the end of their careers, amazing physicians on State supervision because of traumatic events and electrifying residents navigating their personal paths in a field which has drastically shifted in the past 5 years. I have also worked alongside Medical teams as a Hospital Social Worker, an experience which taught me to always assume Healthcare Professionals are doing their best despite incredible obstacles.

Women in Healthcare are my people, your fierce dedication and your deep understanding of patient needs inspire me everyday. I would be honored to hold a mirror to your brilliance and help you be inspired by yourself.

Why trauma treatment for Women in Healthcare?

At first blush, it might feel like your experiences don’t “merit” trauma treatment, especially in comparison to patient situations you see at work. However, a growing mountain of research suggests that it’s “small t” traumas, the things that happen in our daily lives which our brains cannot properly process, which really chip away at our overall well-being. As a healthcare professional, your days are full of “small t” traumas, making these types of treatments, alongside a fantastic therapeutic relationship, a helpful addition to your self-care practice.

And if you’ve got prior trauma, not related to work? We can address that too.

All of you is invited to our work together - not just the healthcare professional.

How I Can Help…

First things first, we are going to get to know each other really, really well. I am going to do my best to help both you and I attune to your values, your learning style and your current priorities.

When I am sitting in session with a client I’m always asking myself “how can we take our sacred conversation and turn it into practical and manageable steps for you to take into the rest of your life? Life is already full overwhelm, we don’t need to bring those vibes into our time together, too.

Once we’ve settled into our therapeutic relationship, we have so many fantastic avenues we travel down during sessions, depending on your specific needs and personal agency. No treatment is better or worse than the other, it all depends on what your unique body and brain require to get you to a place where you breathe easier.

When I work with Medical Professionals, I am aware that they often have their own care team in place and I am available to collaborate with the team you have in place, if you would like me to. However, I find that most of my Case Management with nurses, physicians etc. revolves around developing life-giving community connections and meaningful rituals to help your days feel more authentic to you.

To help illustrate my approach, I have created a graphic below. As a therapist, I see myself as someone in your life helping you carry two buckets on behalf of your highest good.

Ultimately, I see my relationship with my clients as a process of co-creation, I would love to co-create with you.
